About This Experience
CosmoCaixa is Barcelona's science museum operated by the "la Caixa" Foundation, housed in a stunning modernist building expanded with contemporary architecture. The museum's crown jewel is the Flooded Forest (Bosc Inundat), a 1,000-square-meter recreation of an Amazonian rainforest complete with over 100 species of flora and fauna including fish, amphibians, birds, and even caimans living in a climate-controlled environment. Visitors walk through the humid jungle atmosphere observing species in this living exhibit. The Geological Wall displays a cross-section of rock strata showing Earth's geological history over eight vertical slices spanning different ages and environments. The Matter Room (Sala de la Matèria) features interactive exhibits exploring fundamental physics, chemistry, and the properties of materials through hands-on experiments with pendulums, waves, gases, and more. The Planetarium offers digital projections about astronomy and the cosmos. The Click and Flash exhibition demonstrates wave phenomena through sound and light experiments. The Science Workshop (Toca Toca!) allows children to touch and interact with natural objects including shells, minerals, insects, and small living creatures under supervision. The Bubble Planetarium is designed for younger children aged 3-6 to learn about space through play. Temporary exhibitions change regularly covering current scientific topics. The museum emphasizes participatory learning where touching and experimentation are encouraged. The building itself includes the original 1909 modernist structure integrated with contemporary glass and steel additions. The location in upper Barcelona provides views over the city. Multiple levels house exhibitions, workshops, a shop, and a café. With its combination of living ecosystems, interactive physics, and astronomy education, CosmoCaixa offers a comprehensive and engaging science experience.
